Upgrade Instructions

If you are upgrading from a version older than v2.0, you should finish up downloading any files that you might want from your newsgroups. Then run the installer and use the Browse button to select the folder that contains your current unPoster folder.

If you are installing v2.0.0 or higher for the first time, throw away the Database and Newsgroups folders inside your unPoster folder. The program will re-create this data in its new format.

Version 2.0.0 and higher use a different database format, so follow the instructions on this page to convert your current unPoster.sdb database file.

If you are upgrading from a version older than v2.0.0, you will have to have the Watcher re-scan your groups. We are sorry for this inconvenience, but we had to fix some problems in the way that the program identified filenames. When you have v2.0.0 installed, you can set the Starting Point for each group to the last post in the group, or near to it, if you only want the Watcher to find new files and not re-scan all the older files.

  • A bug that was causing the program to crash when certain pictures were displayed in the Viewer has been fixed.

March 7, 2008 - v2.0.2

  • The Viewer will now behave better when the connection to the server times-out, and when switching newsgroups and servers on the Lister.
  • If you download a large picture with a Downloader, you can then click on it on the Lister to see it in the Viewer.

July 6, 2007 - v2.0.1

  • The program will no longer crash when you use the Lister's "Read" button to look at an NFO file.
  • The program has a new icon.
  • This version was re-compiled with RealBasic 2007r3, since RealBasic 2007r2 turned out to be quite buggy.
  • The Intel-only version for the Macintosh has been done away with, and the Mac version is now a "universal binary".

May 12, 2007 - v2.0.0

  • This version complies with the Windows Vista security guidlines.
  • There is now a Mac-Intel native version.
  • If you load many thousands of files into the Lister, and then click a column-header to sort, the program will no longer appear to freeze.
  • There are more options on the Lister's "Load With Filter" window.
  • The Lister now has a "Stop Loading" button in case you change your mind while loading a large newsgroup.
  • The program now uses the SQLite v3 database engine.

May 21, 2006 - v1.1.0

  • Automatic unRAR and unPAR added.
  • A couple of bugs in the yEnc-decoder have been fixed.
  • The NZB downloader has been removed. SuperNZB is now our flagship NZB program.
  • You can now drag-and-drop files from the Lister to an existing Downloader, though the files must be from the same group and server as the Downloader.
  • On the Downloader, you can now drag files upward or downward to re-order them.
  • The Delete key has been implemented on overy window that has a list and a delete function, such as the Lister.

September 14, 2005 - v1.0.0

  • Port setting added to Servers window.
  • Another color option for the Lister has been added to the "Colors" tab of the "Settings" window.
  • When you use the Read button on the Lister to view a file, the size and position of the window that opens up are now saved.
  • Any new Downloaders and NZBDownloaders that you create will now have correct estimated-time-left calculations when the downloader is working on files larger than 2gb.
  • The Lister's Filter window now remembers its text and position for the length of the session.

August 27, 2005 - v0.0.6

Database Structure Change: We have re-designed the newsgroup database structure again. We are pretty sure that this will be the last such change. If you are upgrading before v0.0.5 expires, go through all of your newsgroups and make sure you have downloaded all the files that you want. Then, from your desktop, throw away all of your newsgroup database files. Install v0.0.6 and the Watcher will re-create the database files as it scans each newsgroup. If you don't want to completely re-scan all of your groups, you can go onto the Setup menu, then to Groups, and set the Starting Point to the end of each group. If you are upgrading after v0.0.5 expired, then you will not be able to download any files using your current data. Throw away all of your newsgroup database files and let the Watcher re-create them. Set the Starting Point if you like.

  • Bug fix: The program now behaves better when you use more than one Downloader to download the same file.
  • Bug fix: The progress bar for downloading posts on the Downloaders now works correctly.
  • Bug fix: The Watcher will now find files that have only numeric extensions such as .001, .002, etc.
  • New feature: A "Read" button has been added to the Lister window. Use it to read text posts and NFO files.

July 30, 2005 - v0.0.5

Database Structure Change: We have re-designed the newsgroup database structure. The unPoster will now run much faster, and these database files will be much smaller. However, the new structure is not backward compatible. This is one of the hazards of using beta software. If you are upgrading before v0.0.4 expires, go through all of your newsgroups and make sure you have downloaded all the files that you want. Then, from your desktop, throw away all of your newsgroup database files. Install v0.0.5 and the Watcher will re-create the database files as it scans each newsgroup. If you don't want to completely re-scan all of your groups, you can go onto the Setup menu, then to Groups, and set the Starting Point to the end of each group. If you are upgrading after v0.0.4 expired, then you will not be able to download any files using your current data. Throw away all of your newsgroup databse files and let the Watcher re-create them. Set the Starting Point if you like.

  • The program was putting an extra space in the filename of some part files right before the "-p". Those files should be completed before upgrading - or the spaces can be manually removed by editing the filenames in your parts folder on your desktop. If you are not in the middle of completing a download, then you can igonore this.
  • The program will now download incomplete files. There is a new setting for this on the Settings window.
  • There is a new Files menu command: Re-Open Downloaders.
  • There is a new Files menu command: Open NZB File.
  • Memory leaks in the Watcher and Downloader have been fixed.
  • When you set up a new newsgroup on the Groups window, the database file for it will be created when you click the Save button. Previously, it wasn't created until the Watcher scanned the group, which meant that you could not set the Starting Point until after that.
  • Bug fixed: The Starting Point would sometimes not format post headers correctly.

June 30, 2005 - v0.0.4

  • When a server doesn't respond, the program will no longer wait for it to come back on-line, but will instead go to the next group.
  • A bug that caused the program to crash if it was downloading a file and another program was using the file in the Downloads folder has been fixed.
  • Settings window: There are now color controls for the Lister window.
  • Settings window: There is now an auto-expire option.
  • The Watcher will now find MasterSplitter and HJSplit files.
  • The Watcher will now write a debug file. Previously, only Downloaders made debug files.

May 30, 2005 - v0.0.3

  • Part filename change: Parts are now named with leading zeros in the number part. So, part filenames will now look like this: somefile.rar-p00001.txt instead of: somefile.rar-p1.txt. This was done so that the filenames will sort in order on the desktop and elsewhere such as in NewzToolz. Because of this, you should finish any downloads that you started with v0.0.2 or v0.0.1 before upgrading to v0.0.3. The new version will not be able to find the part files created by the older versions.
  • The Downloader window has been over-hauled with many fixes and enhancements. Downloaders are now persistant. If you exit the program and re-start it, your Downloaders will not go away. They can be stopped and re-started, and you can see a list of the files a Downloader is working on by clicking the triangle in the lower-left corner.

April 29, 2005 - v0.0.2

  • Lister window: The color of files has been changed from blue to black. When a file is downloaded, it is shown in green instead of black. Incomplete files are still shown in red.
  • Lister window: A new "Load With Filter" button has been added to speed things up in newsgroups that have lots of files.
  • Servers window: The program no longer crashes when you try to delete a server.
