The UnPoster - The Non-Stop Binary Newsgroup Downloader

The Newsgroups List

To open this window, go to Setup Menu -> Groups -> and click the Select button next to Group Name.

For each of your servers, use the "Download List" button to download the list of newsgroups. Use the "Search" button to find appropriate groups. For example, type in "cat" and click Search to see a list of all the newgroups with "cat" in their names. Keep in mind that many of these groups will be bogus. Some will have been added by people as a joke, and some will be abandoned. They only way to tell if a newsgroup is active is to look inside it.

Once you have searched for some groups, you can sort them into alphabetical order by clicking the list header where it says "Newsgroups." The unPoster doesn't automatically sort the list because if your search results in a large list, the sorting might take a while. So the program give you the option to sort or not.

You can drag-and-drop a single newsgroup to the Groups window - either to the list or to the Group-Name box. Using the normal list-selection methods, you can select many groups and drag-and-drop them to the list.

From time-to-time, click the "New Newsgroups" tab, and use the "Check for New Newsgroups" button to see what groups have been added.

The list of newsgroups is stored in a database file in the Newsgroups folder inside the unPoster folder. There will be one file for each news server's list. Versions of the program prior to 1.1.0 stored this data in text files. You can now throw those text files away. If you need to save space, you can throw away the .sdb database files whenever you want. You can always re-download the list and have the program re-create them.
