The Clear Cache button will delete all links from the PixWeb2000 links cache. When PixWeb2000 scans a website it keeps track of all the links that it has found. These links will not be followed on future scans of the website. Use the Clear Cache button to delete this information. This will allow you to scan the websites all over again. The Clear Cache button deletes all links for all websites. -
- The AutoHide Tab - Top of Page
When you click the Start button to begin scanning a website, two small windows open. One window to display the links that PixWeb2000 has found and one to display the files that PixWeb2000 is downloading. These windows are called the Scan window and the Download window respectively. The Scan window handles the scan process for the website and the Download window handles the download process for each window. You can have PixWeb2000 automatically hide these two process windows automatically by turning this option on. -
- The AutoUpdate Tab - Top of Page
When you turn on the AutoUpdate option, you allow PixWeb2000 to check our servers for new form definitions and to update your local database. This allows us to extend PixWeb2000's authentication methods and therefore increase the number of protected websites PixWeb2000 can access without us having to release a new version of PixWeb2000. -

- The Required Information Tab - How to Add a New Web Site
- Entering the URL
- The first thing to do is to enter a valid URL into the Website Location field. This is the site that you wish to scan. Below that is the Queue Size field. This value represents the number of pages that PixWeb2000 will place in the Scan Process. Once all pages in the queue have been processed, PixWeb2000 will check the database to see if there are any more pages to scan. If so, the number of pages that you enter in the Queue Size field will be retrieved. The next field is the Upper Limit field. This represents the largest file you wish to download. The final field is the Lower Limit field. This represents the smallest file you wish to download.
-
- After you have completed filling in the Required Info tab, the website is ready to be scanned. But, remember that if the website is password protected you must remember to click the Authentication tab and provide your username and password.
-
- The Optional Information Tab - How to Add a New Web Site
- Filling in Optional Information
- The Optional Info tab allows you to modify many of the parameters used to scan the website. When you click the Optional Info tab, the window changes and you are presented with several more tabs that allow you to customize the website. Each of these tabs is discussed below.
-
- The Filetypes Tab - How to Add a New Web Site
- Selecting Filetypes
- The File Types tab allows you to select the types of files you wish to download. When creating a new site several file types are selected for you. These file types appear in the File Types for This Site list. There is also another list titled Available File Types. This list contains all the file types that PixWeb2000 can download. You can remove file types from the File Types for This Site list by selecting the file type and clicking the << button. You can add file types by selecting an entry in the Available File Types list and clicking the >> button. If the list all of available file types does not contain what you're looking for, you can click the New button to create a new file type.
-
- As mentioned above, there are a number of file types that are automatically added to the File Types for This Site list. These are the default values. You can use the File Types Manager to change the default file types that are added to each new website.
-
- The Filters Tab - How to Add a New Web Site
- Selecting Filters
- The Filters Tab allows you to select which filters you will apply to the website. PixWeb2000 ships with several filters ready for use. For example many websites will include an area where they publish news items. Many times it is not desirable to scan this area of the website. You can use the Ignore News filter to filter out any links that will lead you to news items. Also many websites use the AdForce service to display banner ads. Because these banners are stored in a different domain, when they are encountered, the AdForce domain will be added to the Domain Hopper if you have modified the Domain Hopping value. Since you're probably not interested in downloading a bunch of banner ads, you can use the Ignore AdForce filter to filter out any links that lead to the AdForce domain.
-
- Using filters provides you with a powerful tool to ignore links that you are not interested in. To use them effectively you will need to understand how web pages are constructed. You can use your browser to visit the website and look at the pages. If you see banner ads or if you see links that lead to places you're not interested in, you can view the source of the page to see the underlying HTML. Then you can look at the HTML to see what filters you need to create.
-
- Filtering Mechanics - How to Add a New Web Site
When PixWeb2000 finds a link on a page, it then checks to see if the website it is scanning has any filters associated with it. It then takes the link it has found and runs it through the first filter in the list. When you create a website and add filters, you determine the order in which the filters are applied. The first filter that appears in the Filters for This Site list is the first filter that will be applied to the link. The second filter that appears in the Filters for This Site list will be the second filter that will be applied to the link, and so on. -
- If you create a filter that ignores all links that contain the word "banner", PixWeb2000 will check the link against the filter. If the filter finds the word "banner" in the link, that link will be ignored. If the filter does not find the word "banner" in the link, that link will be passed to the next filter you have assigned to the website.
-
- The Paths Tab - How to Add a New Web Site
The Paths Tab allows you to determine where the files from the website will be saved. The default path is displayed. You can change the default download path for the website by clicking the Browse button and selecting a new folder. When you change the default download path, all subsequent files downloaded from the website will be saved to the new folder. -
- Advanced Path Management - How to Add a New Web Site
PixWeb2000 includes a tool called the Path Manager. This tool allows you to specify where each different file type that is being downloaded from the website is to be saved. For example you can use the Path Manager to tell PixWeb2000 to save all GIF files to one folder and all QuickTime files to another folder. To access the Path Manager, click the Open Path Manager button. -
- The Path Manager consists of two areas. On the left-hand side of the window you will see a list of all the file types debtor being downloaded from the website. On the right hand side of the window you will see the path where files all this type will be saved. To change the path click the Browse button. A small dialog box will be displayed that allows you to select a new folder in which to save the selected file type. Each file type being downloaded from the website can be saved to its own folder. The changes that you make are immediate. When you are done setting up the paths click the Close button to be returned to the website editor.
-
- Special Note - How to Add a New Web Site
- NOTE: if you are creating a new website, you must first enter the websites URL, then click the Apply button. If you do not do this, when you click the Open Path Manager button you will receive a dialog box telling you to click the Apply button. When you click the Apply button you may be presented with a dialog box that asks you to enter a URL. If this happens click the Required Info tab and provide a URL. This needs to be done because PixWeb2000 requires that the website be added to the database before any path management can be applied. This also applies to other operations in the Web Site editor. Dialog boxes will inform you of the steps you need to take.
-
- The AutoScan Tab - How to Add a New Web Site
The AutoScan Tab allows you to determine if the website will be automatically scanned when you have turned on the Scan on Launch preference in the PixWeb2000 Preferences window. -
- The Domain Hopping - How to Add a New Web Site
The Domain Hopping tab allows you to determine how many other domains you will allow PixWeb2000 to scan in addition to the website you are editing or adding to the database. The default value is 0. This means that PixWeb2000 will only scan and process links that are in the domain of the website you are adding. For example, if you add the website www.apple.com and your domain hopping value is set to 0, PixWeb2000 will ignore any links that lead away from the apple domain. If a link is encountered that leads to www.kodak.com, it will be ignored. If you were to increase the Domain Hopping value to 1, PixWeb2000 will add the www.kodak.com domain to the domain hopper. PixWeb2000 would then also begin scanning the newly added domain. -
- Because domains are added to the domain hopper on a first-come-first-served basis, you may need to create and apply filters to filter out those domains that you do not want added. For example many websites will include links to services that display banner advertisements. Since these banner advertisements generally appear at the top all the page and because they usually lead to a different domain, they will be added to the domain hopper first. The result will be that PixWeb2000 will begin scanning and downloading files from the website that is serving up the banner advertisements. To prevent this, you will need to create a filter that will eliminate any links that lead to the unwanted domain. If the domain that is serving the banner advertisements is called www.bannertime.com, you would create a filter that ignores all links that contain the value "www.bannertime.com". You would then apply that filter to the website you are scanning.
-
- There are many instances where a website is served up from many different locations. A good example of this is the NASA website. Then NASA website is composed of several servers. Without the Domain Hopping feature in PixWeb2000, you would be limited to scanning only the www.nasa.gov domain. But, by increasing the domain hopping value to, say, 5 you can access more of the servers being run by NASA.
-
- By combining filters and domain hopping, you can control what domains you will allow PixWeb2000 to add to the domain hopper.
-
- The Other Tab - How to Add a New Web Site
The Other Tab provides access to miscellaneous options. The first option is the Alternate MatchPath algorithm option. If you are scanning a website you can use this option to modify the way in which PixWeb2000 constructs the URLs. This option is seldom if ever needed. The other option allows you to clear the link cash associated with the website. Use this option if you wish to begin scanning a website from scratch. By clicking the Clear Cache button, you are deleting the link history that PixWeb2000 has built for the website. -
- There is also a Clear Cache button in the Preferences window. The difference is that the one in the Preferences window will delete the entire link cache for all web sites. The Clear Cache button in the Web Site editor window will only clear the link cache for the web site you are editing.
-
- The Authentication Tab - How to Add a New Web Site
The Authentication Tab allows you to configure the website so that you can provide your username and password. PixWeb2000 ships with three standard authentication methods from which you can choose. Select the authentication method from the Method drop down list. - If you have the AutoUpdate option turned on in the Preferences window, each time you launch PixWeb2000 it will connect to the servers at TechSono to see if there are any new authentication methods available. This will allow us to provide you with new authentication methods as they are developed without having to release a new version of PixWeb2000 every time a new password protected website is discovered. If you encounter a password protected website that PixWeb2000 is unable to access, it is recommended that you send email to TechSono and include the URL. We will then visit the website and attempt to create a new authentication method that will allow PixWeb2000 to access the website. We call these Form Definitions. Once we have created the new form definition we will place at on our servers. The next time you launch PixWeb2000, the new form definition will be downloaded an added to your database. It will then appear as a new entry under the Method drop down list.
-
- Once you have completed configuring your new website, click the OK button. Because PixWeb2000 employs a non-mobile interface, you do not have to complete the configuration of the new website. The website editor window can be put in the background while you do other things. If you click the New button on the Website Manager toolbar button more than once, you will be able to create several website editor windows.
