NewzToolz EZ for WindowsUpgrade InstructionsBeginning with v2.0, NewzToolz EZ now follows the Windows Vista security guidelines which discourage programs from saving data within their own folders. Instead, Microsoft wants programs to save data in a specially designated folder, and NewzToolz EZ will now do so - even while it is running on XP. These special folders are different on Vista and XP, but you can easily open them on your desktop by using the new "Open App Data Folder" command on NewzToolz EZ's Help menu. If you have an older version of NewzToolz EZ installed, the new version will not find your current data. So, you should finish any large downloads, if you have any in progress, before installing this version to keep things simple. Once you have v2.0 installed, you can re-enter your info such as news server, groups etc. and be done with the upgrade process. If you don't want to do that, and re-search all of your newsgroups in ezGroups and ezRAR, you can copy your database file into the new folder where v2.0 will be able to find it. The file you need to move is NewzToolz-EZ.sdb and if you accepted the default location when originally running the installer, it will be located at C:\Program Files\NewzToolz-EZ\ (Folder 1) which you should open on your desktop. Then, start NewzToolz EZ v2.0 and use the "Open App Data Folder" command on the Help menu to open the second folder. Close the program and use the NewzToolz-EZ.sdb file in Folder 1 to replace the NewzToolz-EZ.sdb file in the second folder. NewzToolz EZ v2.0 also uses a new database engine, so it will not be able to read the NewzToolz-EZ.sdb file that you just copied into its folder. However, when you start the program, it will give you instructions on how to convert the file to the new format. You will also need to re-download the list of newsgroups from your news server(s). We normally make our software handle these kind of changes automatically. However, recently there have been so many changes that the code required to automatically handle them all would be very complex and would bloat up NewzToolz EZ. Windows Vista has a lot of changes over Windows XP. Apple switched from PowerPC chips to Intel chips. The new version of the SQLite database engine doesn't have a conversion function to automatically convert older database files, and RealBasic 2007, the language NewzToolz EZ is written was extensively changed since the original version of NewzToolz EZ. We are working around the clock to make our software compatible with all of this new stuff, and we apologize for not being able to make a smoother upgrade path for you. |
