ConverTastictmWhere are Your Conversions REALLY Coming From? The IP-Address Part of the Server-Log EntryThe IP Address is the first item in the server-log entry. Use this site to take a look at yours. IP addresses can be in two formats: un-resolved and resolved. The un-resolved address is just four numbers separated by dots like this: 255.255.255.255 A resolved IP address looks like this: 12.55.blah.blah.someISP.com You can resolve (look up) an IP number on this site. If you have only the plain numbers in your logs, you will have a more difficult time researching conversions because it is much more difficult to search by ISP. While IP numbers are assigned in blocks to ISP's, and ConverTastic can search by IP-block, most ISP's have many blocks and it is very difficult to even know what all the blocks are, let alone search them all. So, call your hosting company and ask them if they can turn on logresolve. If they cannot, or will not do it, you need to switch hosting companies, or resolve the IP's yourself using ConverTastic's Lookup IP's window. If you do have resolved IP's in your logs, chances are that your shopping-cart system only gives you the plain IP number from your customer. If that is the case, you need to resolve the IP number via the link above before searching for it in ConverTastic. Many people have cable-, and DSL modems that they leave on all the time and will have the same IP address for long periods of time. Those conversions are very easy to research; ConverTastic can usually find them in a second or two. However, many times you will find that your customer's IP changes between the time they first found your site and the time of their conversion. The thing to try next would be a search on only the last part of the IP, such as "aol.com" and the user-agent. If you only have plain IP numbers in your logs, you can try the same sort of search but using the IP block instead. You can find the IP block when you look up the IP number. |
